Science Programs: Live animals, biological artifacts & plants are used in the science programs that We Bring to Your School
Michigan Wildlife: Students explore the fascinating world of Michigan's animal life. Life cycles, adaptations, classification, physical characteristics, and how the climate and other environmental factors affect the survival of animals in Michigan. G K-12 Wildlife of the Americas: From spiders and reptiles to amphibians, birds, and mammals we bring a diversity of animals from North, Central, and South America to teach about life cycles, adaptations, physical characteristics, symbiotic relationships, the importance of healthy habitats and the human impact on ecosystems. G K- 12 Chemistry in Nature: What good is Chemistry? Why do we need to know this stuff? These were questions that I once had and questions that I heard from my students as well. This program utilizes the attraction students have with live animals to teach the importance of knowing and understanding the basics of chemistry. G 6- 12 Ecosystems: From Frozen Lakes to Tropical Forests. Understanding ecosystems is the focus of this program. How maintaining healthy habitats here in Michigan is important to the biodiversity of the rainforest, and how the rainforest is important to Michigan are just a sample of what is covered. Similarities and differences between plants and animals from a variety of habitat types. In addition adaptations, symbiotic relationships, populations, food chains, food webs, and definitions such as predator, prey, consumer, producer, herbivore, carnivore, omnivore and more are covered. G 3 -12 Adaptations: Functions of Living Things. Fur, feathers, scales and more are covered. The physical, behavioral and chemical adaptations that plants and animals have that allow them to survive under a variety of environmental conditions is the focus of this program. G 2-12 Life Cycles: Examples of life cycles for a variety of animals and plants are covered during this program. Plants and animals are used throughout the presentation to demonstrate the various stages of life. G K -12 Basic Needs of Living Things: Food, water, Air, & Space to Live. The needs of both plants and animals are the focus of this program. We cover the affect that soil types, Earth's materials have on plants and animals as well as the importance of food and minerals for growth. G K-12 |
Heredity, Natural Selection, Traits of Living Organisms and the Evolutionary Process. Species adaptations and survival as the result of inherited and acquired traits along with the biological relationships between organisms is covered throughout this program. We explain how diversity within a gene pool is important to the survival of a species if and when conditions in their world changes over time. How and why understanding genetic is important to the growing of crops is also covered in this wide ranging program. G 4-12
Reptiles & Amphibians: The biology, ecology, and natural history of reptiles and amphibians will be explored during this exciting program. The differences between reptile and amphibian life cycles, their physical characteristics, adaptations, behaviors, requirements for life and human impact on these two groups of animals are all examined during this highly educational experience. G K-12 Vertebrates vs Invertebrates: A great diversity of living and non-living vertebrates and invertebrates are utilized in this program designed to teach the classification of various animal groups. The characteristics of animals that place them into one group and not another group is emphasized throughout the program. Exciting, intriguing and amazing bits of information about animals with and without backbones helps to emphasize that invertebrates and vertebrates are both equally important to the Earth's biodiversity. G 2 -12 Butterflies, Bees & Their Relatives: Live insects, arachnids and other related animals along with biological artifacts are used to demonstrate the characteristics of animals that live in a suit of armor. The life cycles, adaptations, physical characteristics, and amazing behaviors of animals with exoskeletons that range from honey bees to tarantulas are covered during the program. G K -12 Those Amazing Plants: The world of plants and the adaptations that allow them to survive is every bit as exciting and diverse as that of the animal world. Plant parts and their functions, life cycles, multiple methods of seed and plant dispersal as well as plants that are used for medicine, food and other purposes are covered during this program. This program uses a variety of Michigan plants. Free trees and/or tree seeds are often available upon request. Be sure to ask if you want them. G 2-12 |
Portable Pond Ecology: Not all ponds are created equal. A Laboratory Activity. Learn about the different kinds of ponds, the types of animals that live in the ponds, and what makes each pond unique. Our naturalist brings a diversity of small pond creatures from multiple ponds. Students will have a chance to be scientists, get their hands wet, make observations, capture and sort the small creatures, and learn the importance of our wetland habitats. Students will learn about ecosystems & habitats, predators& prey, adaptations, life cycles, and much more. This program is best done in the fall and in the spring when the ponds are ice free. A very active hands on Activity. G 2-12
School Yard Discovery Walk: Ecosystems Everywhere. Explore the school yard, the local park, or other site of your choosing. Our naturalist comes to your school or other site so that your school can save on the cost of buses. Nature is all around us, we just need to look. Even in a school yard, or in the city there is life to be observed. From ants and bugs, to birds and plants there is always something to discover. G K-12 PowerPoint Presentations The Environment & Society: (Human Activities & Global Issues) Physical changes made to the environment by people in the past as well as today dramatically alter our local and global ecosystems and economies. Invasive species, biodiversity, water resources, energy, pollution, deforestation and other environmental issues are discussed. History, geography, civics & government, public discourse & citizen involvement are all touched upon in this powerful presentation. G 3-12 Geography With Wildlife & Ecosystem Emphasis Leading wildlife tours around the world for nearly 20 years has resulted in the development the following programs that focus on geography, the environment and society, wildlife, and science.
